Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) is a non-invasive therapy that uses very low-level electrical currents applied to the skin.
The currents used are similar in magnitude to those naturally present in human tissues and are below sensory and motor nerve thresholds. As a result, FSM is usually not felt during treatment.
FSM is used clinically to support pain and inflammation management as well as tissue repair and recovery.
How FSM Is Used
At Brighton Digestive Health, FSM may be incorporated into both initial and follow-up consultations.
Treatment protocols are selected based on an individual’s history, current symptoms and treatment goals. Protocols may change over time as patterns shift and regulation improves.
FSM is used as part of a broader treatment process rather than as a standalone intervention.
Where FSM may be beneficial
FSM may be used as part of an overall treatment approach for people experiencing:
-
digestive and abdominal concerns, including IBS, Chron’s disease, constipation
-
stress-related and nervous system-related symptoms, including anxiety and mood disturbance
-
headaches and migraines
-
chronic or persistent pain, including arthritis, myofascial pain and sciatica
-
musculoskeletal issues, such as disc involvement and tendon or ligament injury
-
injury recovery and post-surgical tissue healing
The relevance of FSM is assessed individually and guided by how it fits within the broader treatment plan rather than by diagnosis alone.
FSM Session
FSM is typically administered while lying down, with currents delivered via moistened towels placed on the skin.
Because the current is very low, most people feel little or nothing during treatment. Many notice a general sense of relaxation during and after the session.
Adequate hydration prior to an FSM session is important, as water supports electrical conductivity within tissues.
Sessions usually last between 45 and 60 minutes.
Equipment
The equipment delivers precise, low-level electrical currents, allowing targeted application to specific organs and tissues as part of an individual treatment plan.
FSM equipment used in clinical practice is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
The next step
If you would like to explore whether FSM is appropriate for you, this can be discussed during an initial consultation.
